I am shitty at thinking about things to write about, well, lately, at least. I am pretty sure it won’t make riveting reading to share my obsession with Dexter (just finished Season 5), my new love of all things Spartacus (2 episodes to go…hummmmuna), how I work, come home, walk the dog, drink wine, and then lather, rinse repeat. My life? She ain’t exactly exciting. Except for the blind date I went on the other night, but I’ll write about that later.
Today, I will join the masses, albeit a bit late, and join the New Year Meme. All the kids are doing it. New Years for me was relaxing; we began with champers around 4, then made yumm-o dinner, then while I was quite ready for sleep well before midnight, I stayed up, just to make sure the damn year did actually leave and not say – “Kidding!” at 11:59:59. By 12:45 in 2011, I was headed to sleep, already noticing that things felt exponentially better.
So, without further adieu:
What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
I separated from someone from whom I thought I never would, I ran 3 half marathons, I trained like an actual runner, I lost my shit on more than one occasion. I skinny dipped. I started typing without looking at my fingers AT ALL. Was told by a 5 year old that I am the coolest lady in the world. I went to Hawaii and danced in the waves. I dipped my toes in a world that will be, soon enough.
Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
This is what I wanted to do:
For 2010, I pledge to make time for my husband, (continue to) eat clean most of the time, keep in touch with family, practice a little balance, take more photos and drink wine (I should make sure there’s a guaranteed winner on here somewhere)
I made time, but it wasn’t really appreciated, so success on that one, anyway. I did eat clean about 80% of the time. I failed a little at keeping in touch with family, but have totally caught up with the Life Implosion of the past 6-7 months. I didn’t take tons more photos, but I did a little. It’s a start. Drink wine. Hells Yeah. I’m in the middle of a glass right now.
This year, not sure. I have been running clients through this, and there are a number of different strategies that could work: theme for the year (give veggies a chance – thanks KK!), pick a word for the year, make a bunch of buckets and make a resolution or goal for each, have goals around reactions and behaviors rather than outcomes or hell, , don’t make them at all.
My goals and plans for the year:
- eat primally, lift some weights, walk lots. Drop some more pounds.
- travel as planned
- write
- find places to wear my bikini
- live with purpose, keep looking for balance
- find happy and triumphant moments
- get divorced
- date
- drink wine
- watch “Love, Actually” WITH Monica
- kayak
- hike
- don’t ever behave to make Baxi hide again. Sorry, little Buddy.
- get regular oil changes on car
- get regular pedicures
- enjoy frequent puppy joy
Did anyone close to you give birth?
Hm. I don’t think so. Seems I should know this, though. Let’s say no, and I apologize if I forgot anyone’s little blessing.
Did anyone close to you die?
No. I nearly lost a couple of grandparents this year, but they’re still around.
What countries did you visit?
Just the big ol’ USA. I keep thinking Hawaii was another country, just because it seemed so removed, but it was still just the US. Bo-ring.
What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Peace and serenity. Sure-footedness. More time outside, with my ass in a kayak. More time in places where my phone doesn’t work and I can hear the ocean dancing.
What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory and why?
Most of the big dates from the year relate directly to one of the saddest and shittiest events of my life, so I prefer not to go into them. To give you an idea, here are the lowlights: June 26, June 30, July 3, July 16, the whole summer, Sept 5, Oct 12, Nov 19, Nov 30, Dec 20.
There were some happy dates, though, and I choose to remember those: runs (the good ones), time with friends, new apartment, the day I didn’t cry, every day since.
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finding my new job, committing to important relationships and balance.
What was your biggest failure?
I guess that would be my marriage.
Did you suffer illness or injury?
My left hip has never been the same after my last race. That’s it.
What was the best thing you bought?
My iPhone. Don’t know what I’d do without it, except maybe upgrade. My car. I love her.
Where did most of your money go?
Carrying 2 houses, bills, coaching stuff
What did you get really excited about?
Most things, it’s just something I do.
What song will always remind you of 2010?
Airplanes – I played it each day and made wishes I didn’t know I didn’t want to actually come true.
Are you?
Happier or sadder? This minute? Happier. Most of the year? Sadder
Thinner or fatter? Thinner. Yay!
Richer or poorer? I guess about the same, but I feel differently about it.
What do you wish you’d done more of?
Kayaked. Gotten outside. Travelled.
What do you wish you’d done less of?
Screamed at my husband. Given a second thought to toxic people who manipulated their way into my life.
How did you spend Christmas?
With my brother and his family and my parents in Kamloops.
What was your favorite TV Program?
Dexter.
What were your favorite books of the year?
It’s sad, but I can’t think of a single one besides The Gargoyle. Read it. Now. Even the first chapter is GOLD.
What was your favorite music from this year?
Loud. In the car. Sing-alongable.
What were your favorite films of the year?
I got to watch Big Night again recently, and it renewed my love for it. I’m sure there were others.
What did you do for your birthday, and how old were you?
I spent my birthday in Kauai – I turned 35. It was magic.
What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A happier ending, or less time wondering if there would be one.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Denim mini skirt. Changed the game completely.
What kept you sane?
My girls. Coffee. Cheap wine.
What is a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010?
I’m infinitely stronger than I think I am.

Good god, I hope your blind date’s hair was permed in the back…
